Carol's Column
Carol Adrienne, Ph.D. October, 2007 How time flies! Last month, in September, I taught three classes at Discover U in Seattle, Washington. The topics were How to Increase Synchronicity, Getting Past Fear to Make Changes, and Introduction to Passion and Life Purpose. A big thank you to all those who showed up and made the classes so much fun! Below is a column I wrote after a similar retreat weekend in November 2000. I thought I would share it with you this month, as it still captures the major points of these topics. True Change or Workshop Fever? Do personal growth workshops really change us? Can we hope to learn and retain new perspectives that can alter our daily experience? These questions often arise right after we have signed up for a retreat or workshop! Perhaps our doubt is a natural cynicism born of too many promises and unmet expectations. Also, common beliefs are that change takes time, that it’s hard for “old dogs to learn new tricks,” or that “workshop fever” wears off as soon as we head for the parking lot. It so happens that Elmer Schettler, one of the participants of the October retreat [2000] that I lead near Sedona, Arizona, took the time to email members of our group to find out how they were doing two weeks after the workshop. I include some of their comments here, as a reminder that when we go inside and look for answers, we DO change. [In the last few years, I have been told about other positive changes from most of these participants. For example, Elmer moved to Colorado and is happily married. Paula is a published author and public speaker. Vanessa has moved and is happily involved in career and a relationship. Patricia has made a positive career move to Monterey, California. Interestingly, in a “full-circle” kind of way, I had dinner two weeks ago in Seattle with Sharon—who moved there since the 2000 workshop and built her dream home.] Tune in and Connect to your Mission When we take the time to ponder what really matters to us, and realign our spirit with a brief touchstone statement or mission statement, we are able to feel again that connection to something larger than just ourselves. In turn, that heightened sense of awareness communicates itself to our circle of friends and acquaintances. Our lives do change, and keep changing as we stay in tune with our unfolding life purpose. In the workshop, we explored the following ideas about how life purpose develops and calls to us: - Life purpose is in-born; prior to birth our soul defined the general or specific life direction that would serve our purpose for the life.
- Life purpose is found
--in what we pay attention to; --in our natural gifts and talents; --whenever we are engaged in an activity where we lose track of time; --within the tasks of each stage of life (e.g.., teens and early twenties the developmental task is finding an identity. In mid-life, our task involves fulfilling responsibilities, developing creativity, and putting ideas into form. In later life, our task is to integrate our experiences, make meaning of life, mentor others, and give back.) Other significant points we covered were: - There are no accidents. Everything happens for a reason.
- Anything is possible if we keep an open mind.
- We keep an open mind when we encounter both positive and “negative” life events with the Zen attitude, “Who knows if it’s good or if it’s bad?”
- The Law of Attraction brings people and opportunities to us that are in relation to how we feel about ourselves.
Turn Your Questions Into Affirmative Statements of What You Want People in the workshop brought such questions as: “How can I know what synchronicities mean?” “What should I be doing next?” “How do I know if my intuition is right?” or “How can I keep a flow going?” Instead of asking what you should do, ask, What do I want? Our objective in the seminar was to take our current life question and make it into a statement about the results we were looking for. For example, if our question is “Should I move to Colorado or stay here?” what is prompting that thought? What are we trying to get by moving to someplace like Colorado? Do we want to be closer to nature? To be able to hike and ski more? Do we want a peaceful atmosphere? Do we want to work at home? We must look for the values we are seeking to have, and we must be clear about how we want to feel once we have achieved success. Therefore, to create an affirmative statement that will attract what we want, we can take our question and rephrase it. “Should I move to Colorado?” becomes, perhaps (varying according to the individual) “My new job is close to the mountains, and I have lots of time for outdoor activities.” Or “My surroundings contribute to a sense of peace and stimulate my creativity.” Instead of struggling to second-guess outcomes, we set the tone for what we want to attract, and then follow any kinds of clues or synchronicities to move in that direction. We Set the Tone of Our Lives with Our Thinking Each of our group made up his or her own positive statement of purpose to use as a navigational touchstone in the coming days. Here are some comments within the first two weeks: Time to Read and Enjoy the Airport Patricia, whose job is marketing a ski resort, created a statement of purpose about being in touch with the wonder and magic of life. In an email to the group, she said, My world of “abundance, receiving gifts of wonder and magic” started right when I missed my flight home by two minutes. Having to spend ten hours in the Phoenix airport could put a “normal” person on edge. I found it, however, an amazing place to be. There were these kids working at a food court dancing, telling jokes, laughing and having a great time--rather atypical for minimum wage workers. I was so moved I found the manager and told him what a great group of employees he had and that it truly made a difference in my life. I also found time to read the entire book by Shirley Maclaine, The Camino. It couldn’t have been a more perfect book to complete our weekend. It is Maclaine’s personal account of her 500-mile spiritual pilgrimage on the Santiago de Compostela through northern Spain—a trek taken by the likes of Charlemagne and St. Francis of Assisi. Back at home, after contesting my severance package with my company, I just learned that I was refused an extension. It still smarts, but I believe there’s a lesson in there somewhere. Of course, now I can truly be free.” Living Authentically and Letting Go of Control Barbi, an extremely enthusiastic woman who works a second job just for the fun of being in retail fashion, wrote: My purpose to ‘live authentically’ is proving to be great fun. I have noticed a shift in the energy around me…specifically certain ‘beings’ have disappeared. I didn’t even have to say, ‘Go away!’ For me the gift in the retreat was the validation once again that with surrender all things are possible, and life becomes magic. Getting in Tune with Oneself Paula, who works for the department of corrections in Texas, wrote, When I returned from Sedona, a close friend of mine, through synchronistic events had purchased the house of her dreams. She asked that my husband and I ‘just move’ into her home, which I had envisioned as the house of my dreams! I can only describe the retreat weekend as life changing. People have commented that I physically LOOK different, relaxed and peaceful, and that my energy is calming. What, me? Calming? Before the retreat my anxiety level was so high I couldn’t speak in public, and barely spoke in staff meetings. After speaking in the retreat and feeling such supportive energy, and becoming in tune with myself, I was able to create and led an exercise (based on the ones we did) at a staff retreat. LED IT!” Increased Synchronicities of Right Time, Right People Elmer, the soybean farmer from Iowa who started our email correspondence, said, Since the workshop and my clear intent each morning to state my purpose of ‘Show up, be present, and let go of outcome’ amazing things have been happening. People have been showing up in my life at the right time with the right-whatever-it-is that they bring. Attracting Opportunities from Your Inner State of Being (How You Feel About Yourself) Vanessa, who owns a successful marketing and PR firm, wrote, This past week I kept reminding myself of my purpose statement, ‘to greet each day with an open heart and realize my self value.’ If it has done nothing else it has certainly lifted my spirits. I think it also allowed me to have a very nice first date with someone new last night! I also read a book called, The Eagle and the Monk, and it contains a statement I have easily adopted as mine: ‘Your self value is the foundation of your life.’ Of course, this blends perfectly with my own purpose statement. Fearlessness Rebecca, at twenty-five the youngest member of our group, wrote, My new man told me he absolutely loved this particular look I get in my eye when looking at him sometimes. He said, ‘There is absolutely no fear.’ If you remember, my synchronicity word card at the end of the retreat was ‘fearless.’ I was so overwhelmed by joy, I cried. Living in the Magik of Disovery Sharon, an award-winning interior designer, wrote, What I have noticed most after the weekend is that I am very clear on how I want my life to FEEL. I had a fantastic and synchronistic weekend before the Sedona retreat, and then I had a flat three-day trip the following weekend. I want to live in the magik—and I want all of my encounters to be rewarding and stimulating. I am going to recommend the book, The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz. It seems to fit the thought pattern that is floating amongst the group. I also love the Zen master’s story in Carol’s book, The Purpose of Your Life, on page 248 that teaches us to have an open attitude by saying, ‘Who knows if it’s good or if it’s bad.’ Happy October! September, 2007 Carol Adrienne One reader sent an inquiry that speaks very much to our desire to find a life purpose amidst what seems like an all-too-mundane daily life. But is this daily life exactly what our life purpose is all about? We can see from S’s chart that the question of life purpose is not easily answered by finding the “right job title” in terms of livelihood! In S’s case, below, I took a look at her numerological chart. Through the numbers, I see the complex patterns created by a desire to express her individuality (her many 1’s) within a situation that requires responsibility and some self-sacrifice—(her many 6’s.) Living out this dynamic between self and the needs of others, whom we love and care about, is a frequent scenario—perhaps one of the most prevalent in the world! Hi Carol, My name is S N W (birth date 12/15/63) and I am the sole financial support for my family since the birth of our second daughter in January. I have been in my sales position for a little over three years now. My husband is a stay-at-home dad. Without getting into too much detail, I have a nagging feeling that I am supposed to be doing "something" else. Unfortunately, I don't know what that "something" else is. One of my goals has been to support my family financially at a comfortable level, which is not happening currently since I have needed to take loans out to meet our monthly rent. I am a believer in synchronicity so I feel I am aware of signs that may be coming my way, but maybe I'm missing something. Any insight that you can provide would be much appreciated. Dear S, I can understand your restlessness and need for a “life review.” Your numerological chart shows that you are in a 9 Personal Year! The 9 always completion. Therefore, you are wrapping up a nine-year cycle during the course of 2007. In January of 2008, you will be starting a new cycle. Of course, since your birthday is late in the year—December—you may feel that you are still to enter your 9 year in 2008. Generally I consider the Personal year to be active from January to January in any year, despite late birthdays. That said, one way or the other, you are in the process of winding up the goals that you have had for the last nine years. Let me lay out the numbers as I have calculated from your full, original, birth name and birth date. I’ll just briefly review the most important influences to give a sense of what you are meant to do in this life. Major Qualities Your First Name, S (I’m only using initials to protect your privacy,) totals to 3, which shows you have gifts as a communicator. This name indicates a positive nature, and good people skills. If you are not getting the prosperity you want, perhaps you need to UNLEASH your joy of communication with people more profoundly in your sales position. Your Middle Name, N, adds up to 7, which means you are also curious, sometimes skeptical, and are happiest when you are digging for answers to life's deeper questions. Therefore, part of your satisfaction will be fulfilled by studying deep subjects in the area of spirituality (or other interests such as technology, writing, history, medicine, or energy work.) However, studying may be enough—you may not need to enter these fields professionally unless you feel a strong desire to do so. Your Last Name, W, is a 5, which is a promoter and disseminator. This name indicates a strong ability to find new ideas and opportunities, have a variety of careers, and rebound well from setbacks. Lifetime Destiny Your lifetime Destiny, is 6—the path of the advisor, teacher. A large part of your Destiny or purpose is to develop responsiveness and responsibility (which you are doing in your role as the financial provider in the family.) Your KEY to success is: Develop a wide range of loyal relationships. Career choices for your 6 Destiny are found in any type of service from landscape gardener to teacher to financial planner (if you are attracted to confronting your money issues.) What Turns You On (and What You Resist) From the vowels in your birth name, I see your Heart's Desire (motivation) is the number 19/1, which signals the need for you to express independence, and originality. To be happy you need to express original ideas and have them accepted in the outside world. While you value the idea of being a pioneer or having your own business, you secretly fear criticism or failing publicly (due to the karmic nature of the number 19.) This also may indicate that you have strong ideas about right and wrong. Your ideal mate is good-looking, intelligent, supportive, flexible, and enjoys complementary goals. I hope this describes your wonderful husband! Challenges and Karmic Lessons Since you have twenty-one letters in your birth name, your Habit Challenge is another 3, again the number indicating an emphasis on creating strong creative and communication skills—have you tried any public speaking or writing? You will feel more secure if you take practical measures to balance income and expenses. Another key point is to train your mind to find the positive, in the face of setbacks or fear. Also to learn to relax without feeling you are lazy! Again, the missing numbers in your name yield another 3, this time as a karmic lesson for you in the area of communication and creativity. No wonder you feel as if you should be doing something creative! This, however, doesn’t mean you should abandon your responsibilities as a householder and parent (your 6 Destiny!) As it turns out you also have a 6 karmic lesson—responsibility—which your 6 Destiny is giving you the perfect opportunity to complete through your family and your decision to be the bread-winner. Your third karmic lesson is 8—which involves learning to stay empowered—and not give your power away to others. You feel a sense of fulfilling your life purpose whenever you respect your own power and ability to attain financial security and credibility. Karma is released when have work/life balance, and do not worry constantly about money. Natural Gifts Your Day of Birth,15, is another 6! You naturally attract responsibility, home, marriage, and family. People turn to you for comfort or advice. Your 1 Birth Path (from the total birth date) shows an independent and forward-thinking nature—which is exactly in line with your 1 Heart’s Desire. Ultimate Goal—Perhaps your Life Purpose Adding together your independent and original 1 Birth Path to your family-oriented and responsibility 6 Destiny, we get your Ultimate Goal number 7--Spiritual Connection. This signals that by the end of your life you are likely to have achieved much wisdom. You may feel a deep faith or spiritual understanding. You will have learned the value of listening to the quiet voice within, and been able to see the purpose in what has happened in your life. You will be known for your intellectual achievements and your quiet, reassuring presence. Respect Timing Our lives develop through four separate periods called Pinnacles. Each comes with a Challenge. Your current (Second) Pinnacle shows: Second Pinnacle (from 36 to age 44—your current stage) 7 Knowledge The emphasis has been on becoming an expert, researching, analyzing; deep lessons in spirituality, trust, and solitude. This search for deeper meaning is making you review and question your purpose right now. Something you have learned is part of your over all Ultimate Goal of 7—spiritual understanding or realizing the importance of the spiritual life. Second Challenge (from 36 to age 44—your current stage) 5 Change You must learn to use free time wisely, be adaptable, keep up-to-date, and remain active and youthful. Moving into your next, Third Pinnacle (from 45 to age 53) 16/7-- brings in the development of expertise and trust. The emphasis will be on the spiritual healing of old abandonment issues, realizing inner self-confidence, and developing personal creativity. Your next, Third Challenge (from 45 to age 53) 2--shows the need to be self-nurturing. You will be learning to maintain balance and boundaries in relationship; to use both patience and honesty. Personal Year of 9 in 2007 or possibly 2008 During the next three to twelve months (depending on how you feel about the beginning of your 9 Personal Year) old ideas, desires, or situations are ready to depart to make way for the new. It’s time to let go of fears and self-doubt, complete unfinished emotional business, and expand your goals. New things are likely to come in around October, so clear the clutter so new energy can flow in. You will be in alignment when you pursue spiritual interests, different philosophies, and receive healing. Above all, listen to your intuition. It’s important to release feelings of regret, blame, self-pity, and procrastination—although there is absolutely no need to rush into a new decision, either. Most of our life purpose seems to be about developing personal characteristics, completing previous karmic imbalances, and deepening our spiritual depth and enlarging our soul. Quite a challenge, and certainly not accomplished merely by what we do for a living. Post Script from S, Hi Carol, First, thank you so much for answering my request. I thought that you might not have the time to answer so I really appreciate it. Very eye-opening for me...the emphasis on communication really stood out since that seems to be something that I gripe about daily that people do not do well, whether it's my customers not responding to e-mails or voicemails or the way that some people communicate poorly. And when the writing was tied into it...I've commented to people that I should write a book about effective communication, whether it's in person, e-mail, voicemail, etc. The chart has brought me some much needed focus. It's also good to know that this year is the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new cycle. I've been feeling that so the chart confirmed what I felt. August 2007 Carol Adrienne, Ph.D. MCD, a glass artist, from Quebec writes “I will turn 50 in September and this year it feels as if my whole is life falling apart. After being repeatedly rejected for art contests, exhibits, and a research grant, I have had only one juried selection. My work is not selling enough, despite the fact that everyone loves the products. I decided to close my heart’s dream glass studio. I just applied for my MA in art, but was refused. Since March I have applied for many related jobs in my field of sixteen years: French as a second language, and was not selected. Where I am supposed to go? What is my mission? I had combined teaching and art and was good and happy in those two fields. I am a single mother and fear my immediate future. What am I not seeing? Dear MCD, I appreciate your situation. I, too, was a single mother, and pursued a career in painting until my mid-forties. I love color, sitting quietly, and painting. However, I cannot say that I loved the marketing aspect of my then-career. Today, I no longer paint, but I do consider myself an artist at heart, even though I now make my living as an author and life coach The Artist Within Stretches Us I will try to shed some numerological light on your question analyzing your birth name and birth date (thank you for sending them.) But first, I hope you will indulge me for a moment in taking an artistic liberty. Your question prompted me to think of Vincent van Gogh—certainly a good example of a struggling artist. I suddenly wondered, What if Vincent van Gogh (a terrific letter writer, whom many authors quote for his wisdom) had written to me about his artistic plight? Perhaps, he might have said: “Dear Ms. Adrienne, I have been painting for several years, but so far have sold only one painting, (Red Vineyard at Arles.) While I love color more than anything, I don’t know if art is the purpose I’m here to fulfill. So far, nothing is working out in my life. I have had a good upbringing with much devotion and culture. (As an aside, I have always thought it odd that my mother had a previous stillborn son, whom she named Vincent before me.) Others see me as somewhat emotional, and frankly, I lack confidence in myself. In the past few years since1860 I have decided to become an artist. During this period I have had two unhappy romances, and have worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art salesman, and a preacher in a rather dreary mining district in Belgium. In this last position, I was dismissed for being over-zealous. I admit that sometimes I feel things too deeply. I remained in Belgium to study art, determined to give happiness by creating beauty. I am very poor, but I would rather spend what little money I have on art supplies than food. Also, I should mention that I have been in and out of mental asylums, as I am frequently severely depressed. But for my brother, Theo, I don’t know what will become of me. What do you see for me?” Vincent van Gogh How Long Does Our Destiny Unfold? Dear VVG, Thank you for sharing these difficult times with me. From your birth name, I see that the name Vincent has the master number 33/6 vibration—showing that you feel deeply and have something to teach others. Van Gogh is another master number—11/2—indicating that you are very sensitive, humble, and yet able to inspire others. Both your month--March (3)-- and day, 30--give you the vibration of 3—love of color, beauty, and art. This 3 vibration is amplified three more times in your chart, most importantly through your 3 Heart’s Desire (desire for self-expression and, in your case, sensitivity to color.) Taking into account your reputation for unconventionality and over-zealousness, some of your trouble may lie in the total of your birth date, which is the karmic number 14/5. This number is further amplified by your also having 14 letters in your name. Fourteen is one of the numbers signifying a condition from a past life (or lives) that is being worked through once again. The number 14 insists on freedom, resists rules, and often makes a person extremely unconventional. In this case, I wonder if your artistic expression (or perhaps avant-garde thinking) was suppressed in a previous lifetime? Fourteen often means that a person has an inordinate desire for freedom or an excessive and disruptive streak that works against success. I see a “cross over the mouth” in your chart, Vincent, which could represent past experiences with censure or retribution for heretical ideas. However, in other lifetimes, you obviously had a talent for theories, writing, or invention (as shown by the perfect balance in both your “line of artistic talent” and your “line of mental prowess.” Your life does seem to give you many challenges through these karmic and master numbers. Your Destiny, for example, is yet another master number 44/8, which indicates a path of trying to master the material aspects of money, status, and professionalism. In your case, Vincent, this material success will actually take some time to be achieved. If it is any solace to you now, all your paintings will be sold in the future—for millions and millions. For example, that portrait you made of Dr.Gachet, your physician, will be sold for $82.5 million dollars to a Japanese businessman in 1990. Dear Vincent, your chart shows that you are an old soul. Old souls often seem to encounter extreme challenges in order to fulfill their purpose of completing karma or expanding their earthly experiences. Your lifetime challenge (5) is to grapple with your extreme need for freedom, and to carry on despite your unstable physical body (which physicians eventually may diagnose as epilepsy.) Unfortunately, medical advances have not been made yet to address your condition. Despite the difficulties of living that you face, ultimately, what gives meaning to your life is your response to color and what you see beyond ordinary perception. Therein lies your salvation despite what happens in physical reality. Your Ultimate Goal number, Vincent, is 13/4—the karmic number of death, rebirth, and transformation. Only time will reveal that you have indeed been a transformer of perception on a world-wide scale.” Now, MCD, back to your own life and your question, “What am I not seeing?” Learning to Trust and Accept Ourselves is Part of Our Life Purpose Of course, I do not have the benefit of historical facts, such as I can access with the life of Vincent van Gogh. However, I can tell you that, numerologically, your Destiny (from the birth name) is a karmic number 19/1. Nineteen means that part of your life purpose is to continue to re-invent yourself, trust yourself, and develop your personal talents (1.) The 19 aspect of the 1 Destiny would say that you, too, like Vincent van Gogh, may have suffered in past lives when trying to do something different or unique. In your current lifetime, you have another opportunity to believe in yourself—and to put your heart into a talent, as you obviously did with your glass blowing studio. Avoid the temptation to think you have done anything “wrong.” Economic conditions may be beyond your control in this case (despite our best use of our positive thinking.) However, even poor economic conditions may stimulate a deeper purpose within our own life. Times Change Looking at the influences in your numerology chart, it’s not surprising that times have changed, causing you to close your studio. The time most suited for your entrepreneurial pursuit was in the last ten years or so, between the ages of 39 and 47 (although other indications show that creating that business was not an easy road for you.) Challenges are Purposeful Your 16/7 Birth Path is another karmic reminder that you will encounter certain people or situations in this life that evoke past connections. Disappointments or setbacks are part of this 16/7 path, giving you a chance to become more spiritually aware. Sixteen also indicates that you have sometimes been a catalyst for others, without, perhaps, even knowing it. Despite the spiritual depth of your nature (16/7,) from which your artistic abilities arise, you should succeed in material life as shown by your Ultimate Goal of 8—money, power, authority, and success. I can hear you ask, When does this start, then?! Do That Which is in Front of You This year, 2007, is a time for testing your powers of optimism and keeping a sense of humor (3 Personal Year.) I would say that the key to the next two years (up till about September of 2009) lies in “not pushing the river.” You are in a 2 Essence in the next two years, which to me, would say, slow down, make no big gestures, and go with whatever flow comes in. It’s possible success will come from a partnership (2) or assisting someone else in their business. Bide your time, and yet set an intention to look for the beauty (2) in each day. You still show a strong streak of creativity, which is not going away. Perhaps you will be attracted to another artistic medium. Life Demands Creativity at Every Moment This period of the 2 Essence until 2009 definitely resonates nicely with your 2 Heart’s Desire (to inspire others and to create harmony.) A strong creative effort flourishes again in your mid-fifties, so keep developing your eye. In the meantime, find a job that pays the bills and create a life of security and intimacy until such time as you can see another way (probably around age 58.) Give from the Heart, Receive from the Universe |
July 2007 Carol Adrienne, Ph.D. A few weeks ago, I had three women friends over for dinner. Selma Lewis, a psychotherapist, and Jane Straus, a fellow author and life coach, are both based in Marin County, California. Ellen Falcinelli is a marketing consultant in the jewelry business—and a lover of all things Italian. Over dinner, we were sharing stories about what we were each doing these days, and I was struck by a story I hadn’t heard before from Jane. She’s been a spiritual life coach and counselor for over twenty-five years. “But,” she laughingly told us, “My alter ego is a grammarian. Even most of my life coaching clients don’t know that I’m the author of a perennial Amazon.com bestseller, The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation.” I first met Jane in 2005 when she was just publishing her self-help book, When Enough is Enough: Stop Enduring and Start Living Your Extraordinary Life. Jane is now in the process of finishing her first novel, and just completed a screenplay collaboration with our mutual friend, screenwriter, Bruce Gelfand. She has appeared on A View from the Bay, a television program based in San Francisco, showcasing outstanding local people. As we continued our dinner, we discussed ideas such as, “what goes around comes around,” or “what you put out is what you get back.” We also agreed that clinging to preconceived notions is death to synchronicity and effortless flow. The old models of capitalism are based on supply and demand, rooted in the idea that when something is perceived as scarce, it is deemed more attractive and therefore valuable. Marketing is generally seen in terms of establishing a territory, finding a competitive edge, and creating an exclusive brand identity. It’s about keeping something out in order to get things in. Competition, while it does stimulate creativity, can also create distrust, isolation, and anxiety—not exactly congruent with the path of abundance. What could be another way to work? Many of us know from experience that trusting our hearts (and intuition) to guide us can take us to a place that we never dreamed possible. As with every important task in life, listening to the beat of inner wisdom requires commitment and trust. Sometimes it can also mean being willing to defy all business logic. Jane Straus’s story about the popular book she wrote--which has sold over 95,000 copies and is still selling over 1500 books a month-- is just such a story of successful convention-busting courage. Jane told us, “The story of the phenomenal success of The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation began thirty-one years ago.” The full story, excerpted here, appears on her website at http://www.grammarbook.com Back in 1975, when the State of California was formulating its plan for a training branch, no one knew what employees wanted or needed. Jane, an undergraduate at the University of California at Davis who was diligently seeking work as a waitress, was offered the job of finding out in exchange for three units towards graduation. Jane interviewed hundreds of State employees and found out that they needed English and math programs to be able to pass civil service promotional exams. She sent in her results and kept knocking on restaurant doors. One day, she got a call. "Jane, it looks as though you can write well. Can you teach a class in English?" Desperate and too naïve to know better, Jane answered with a resounding, "Sure." This is how a star was born--or at least began to rise in the sky. Within weeks, thirty employees signed up for a one-day trial program in Basic English Grammar and Punctuation Skills taught by (twenty-year-old) Training Consultant Jane Straus. During those intervening weeks, Jane scoured the library for materials but found no books that conveyed the rules of English in, well, plain English. So she wrote the rules her way, made up some exercises, ran off some copies, clipped them together as handouts, and showed up for the first day of class. When she walked in and announced that she was the teacher, the students, all much older than she, gave each other surreptitious, disbelieving glances. Jane took this as a challenge and hoped for the best. Well, the class raved about Jane and her material in their reviews. Cloud nine lasted for only a day or two because Jane still had to find "real" work (that is, for pay). What she didn't know was that the phones at the newly formed State Training Center were ringing off the hook. Word had spread quickly. More and more State employees demanded that they get an equal opportunity to benefit from Jane's seminar. This evolved into Jane's first career as a Training Consultant. Eventually, Jane taught many different courses for State and Federal employees as well as for the private sector and nonprofit organizations….Meanwhile, she continued to refine the English material, eventually turning it into The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation. Jane continues, “When the Internet came to be, I saw it as a way of being able to help people understand the rules of English world-wide. I wanted to reach people in third world countries, living in huts with dirt floors, those who would never have access to an English class, but might have access to a computer someday. I wanted the book to serve as an ambassador of good will from the US. That was my grandiose vision, but it actually turned out to be realized!” When her Web designer found out that she was paying her own good money to post The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation on the Web site for free, he thought she was crazy. Why would anyone buy a book if they could get it for free? She says, “First of all, I wasn’t in the business of selling online. Amazon and on-line shopping carts didn’t yet exist. To sell the book, I just went around to bookstores, giving them one or two books on consignment. Since I never thought of myself in the book-selling business, I didn’t see any harm in giving it away. I believed that the book would be helpful to people, and I thought I had a way of teaching that was simple and effective—and I still think that it’s a great, user-friendly book.” As the Internet grew and became “monetized,” Jane encountered even more pressure from people, to take the free book off the site. “However,” says Jane, “I did just the opposite. I added more content. The result has been that this free book has consistently been one of the most popular selling books on Amazon.com year after year. “I sell an average of about 1500 books a month,” says Jane. “My Web site is one of the most popular on the planet--in the top 100,000 in the world. I get offers all the time to buy my domain name and content for a lot of money. I turn it down, because that would defeat the purpose of giving it away for free! Who else is going to convince the world that Americans aren’t all bad!” she says with a laugh, but with serious intent. Recently she agreed to sell the publishing rights to a large company, but only with the proviso that 100% of the text remain free on the site. At first the publishers balked, as no other published author has ever had that much content posted for free. When she refused to back down, they wanted to know her thinking. They needed to be convinced to change the conventional approach. She had only to point to her years of success, by asking the question, “What other grammar book sells this kind of volume per month? What makes my grammar Web site one of the most frequently visited in the world? Jane says, “English rules are in the public domain. But the key is in how you teach them, how you package the information. Obviously, customers aren’t going to know how good the book is unless they can see it. Why would they pick mine out of hundreds of grammar books? Because it’s a good method of teaching grammar! People see that and decide they want to buy a copy. Or teachers will get copies for their whole class. Big companies will get it for all their employees. The publishers were convinced. I’m one of the only authors who has more than 20% of their content on the Internet after selling the rights. It’s just not done. But we have to recognize that it’s a new age in publishing. We have to learn to work with the Internet and not against it. It’s a challenge on a lot of levels to let go of our limiting beliefs about competition.” Can we really believe in success and abundance? The reality is that the scarcity model leads too often to war, poverty, deprivation, and depredation. Jane is constantly adding more material to her site and is thinking of doing another training book, making it free to teachers and allowing them to make unlimited numbers of copies for their students. It’s all on the abundance model. Jane can be contacted at Jane@janestraus.com. She invites everyone to visit her other Web site http://www.stopenduring.com to read excerpts from Enough is Enough!: Stop Enduring and Start Living Your Extraordinary Life—or--watch a video clip of Jane in action! June 2007 Carol Adrienne, Ph.D. Does career passion last forever? Once we leave a job, how do we sort out what we want to do? These two questions came up for the following two readers who submitted their biographical data for a short numerological analysis. Dear Carol, My name is (withheld for privacy) and my birth date is 10/22/1976. About six years ago I was inspired to create new and innovative toys in order to bring out the playfulness in adults, and to bring joy to life and kids around the world. Most of all I was inspired by Tom Hanks in the movie Big. I created a career for myself, and have now been in the toy industry for six years. The first year or so was magical and awesome to bring to life this idea that I saw in a movie. However, the first company I worked for did not allow me to grow and move up. I saw many signs that it was time to move on. Now I have been at this second company for four years, and I feel as if the same thing is happening again. Even though I have been very lucky and blessed to be working for this employer, I feel as though I am not appreciated (not getting paid enough, not respected enough, and not growing. I’m still in the same position since I started four years ago). Most of all, I have nearly lost all of the zest and passion that I once had when I created this job for myself. I always believed that anything is possible if you truly believe in it. Is it time to move on? Is this my life’s purpose? On another note, I invested so much time in this career that I have not yet met my "soul mate." I constantly get reminded at work and from my family members that the clock is ticking and I am way overdue for getting married. How do you recommend I handle this? S S Dear SS According to influences in your numerological cycles, I am not surprised that you are restless and feeling like moving on from this job. For one thing, you are in a 5 Personal Year, and 5 always wants to broaden, expand, change, and grow! Not only that but your Essence influence from your birthday last October to this October, 2007 is a 1—which is calling for you to take charge of your life and make some decisions about what will give you back passion and vitality. You have been under the 1 Essence since October, 2004, just about the time you moved to this second company. The lessons you were being prompted to learn there were all in the realm of the number 1. For example, in order to feel successful during the reign of the 1 you would have done well to choose something new and unique to challenge yourself. You would have needed to wake up every day and believe in yourself and what you had to offer. You would have moved forward by being confident and assertive when others may have been overriding your input. You would have succeeded when focusing on your talent and proposing original ideas. Your Birth Path—which is your natural self and outlook on life—is a 1, which means you have been “in your element” for the last three years. Furthermore, number 1 is naturally an independent freedom-lover who wants to live according to her own desires, so I’m not surprised you stayed single through the last three years! I notice something else in your chart—a tendency to be inspired by quality and talent and to have high expectations when involved with a person or a project. You may get bored with mundane details. Do you feel that you are more passionate at the beginning of a new development, rather than at the end or in the middle? If so, then your passion is probably dying down due to the stage you are now in with the work environment—it’s not new, exciting or challenging anymore—and this feeling may be exacerbated because you feel overlooked (invisibility is death to a 1!!) I always believe that life places us in exactly the right situation so that we can learn certain lessons or have certain experiences that are part of our life path. Given that, I suggest, that before you move on, why not listen to your intuition about how you could exploit this situation to learn something? The 1 is asking you to be independent, courageous, honest, forthright, original, and confident. To develop these qualities you need the right opportunity, don’t you? This job may be the opportunity to develop these traits and get paid for it! Consider the following: * What original idea, plan, or improvement to the company might you have to present? (Is there anything you’ve been wanting to say about improving conditions at the company that’s been in the back of your mind?) * What if you wrote up a one-page synopsis outlining your value to the company and what you have been responsible for so far, and then sending it to your boss with a note that you would like to discuss a pay raise? Women traditionally shy away from asking for more money, whereas men are expected to assert themselves, and often do move ahead if they ask. What have you got to lose, especially if you think you want to change jobs anyway? * How could you make one last impact that would ensure an outstanding reference when you leave? You have the Line of Success in your chart. Not only that, but you have the heart of a researcher (7), and the day of birth of the Master Builder 22. Remember, the 22 achieves mastery by using the power of visualization, intention, and intuition to move in new directions. Why not engage that playful quality of yours and make a ‘board game” just for fun, marking a whimsical progress to a fabulous new job? The job isn’t sucking passion out of you—you’ve just started focusing on all the things you don’t like, instead of all the things you do like. Start looking for every tiny positive thing this week at work and see how the scene shifts. You can still move to a new job if you like, but mine the gems in this one first. As to everyone pushing you to wake up and get married, it’s important to realize that your chart isn’t oriented to the domestic side of life. It seems to indicate that your life choices will be more focused on creativity, exploration, and living to a different tune (and schedule). That being said, it is possible that you could fall in love and even get pregnant next year during your 6 Personal Year (marriage, home, and family) with a 3 Essence (fertility and creativity.) All the best. A thirty-year-old man writes: I am a huge believer in the law of attraction and synchronicity. I have recently quit my job because it was absolutely eating at my soul. I feel free and happy again, but I’m broke. I am 30 years old and feel very lost and want so badly to find my purpose and make a difference. I have read your book about the purpose of life, and James Redfield’s whole series of books. Is patience all I am lacking? CS Dear CS Your birthdate of February 14, 1977 adds up to the number 22/4—the master builder. This number drives you to understand spiritual principles and apply them. I suggest you mentally give thanks for job you just quit, and for all it gave you in terms of sustenance, friendships, paying the bills, and valuable experience. It may have ended by eating your soul, but there was something necessary that you needed to learn there. Your chart shows that the last three years were under the karmic 16/7 influence—so this job was in some way helping you balance past life decisions. Freedom is a big deal for you--you have a 14/5 Destiny (freedom and rebelliousness) and you are born on the 14/th as well, strengthening the influence of 5. If our Destiny number reveals a big part of our purpose, then your purpose has to do with the constructive use of freedom. Your ambition is to be independent and develop something of your own (19/1 Heart’s Desire.) Therefore, now that you are looking for a new direction, it’s imperative to use this time to good advantage—primarily to learn anything to do with spirituality, healing, education, and foreign cultures (your 9 Essence.) With the karmic overtones of your 14 and 19, you may have had past lives where your radical nature caused severe repercussions. Heads sometimes rolled in those days just for being different. Don’t shy away from leadership positions, but make sure the leadership is for the good of many—not just your own ambition. Likewise, part of your life purpose is to eliminate any tendency to blame or feel like a victim of circumstances. Your Ultimate Goal is a 9—humanitarian benefit to the masses. Since you have just entered a nine-year period of the number 9 Essence—this would mean that what you do in the next nine years is very crucial to your later life—especially the period between age 42 and 50. This is because of a 9 Pinnacle occurring for nine years starting in 2019. With a 14/5 Destiny, you’ll probably be happiest having several careers over the course of your life. Your Soul did not desire one career experience for the whole lifetime. The 14/5 excels at coming up with just the right answer when needed and requires flexibility, practical sense, and good timing. Sure, you could be a stock broker with your numbers, (I have no idea what your last job actually was,) but I think you want to foster deeper values than just making money. You have an entrepreneurial spirit where you might provide goods or services to enhance the environment or the well-being of others. Think ecology, body work, alternative energy, organic products, and foreign service like the Peace Corps. In addition, unconditional love is up for you—and an interesting long-term relationship with someone foreign or who has a different way of thinking is very possible over the next nine years. You asked if patience was all that is necessary. You do have a strong streak of patience showing in your numbers, but I think now you need to trust that you are a larger soul than you thought (not in any arrogant sense of self-importance, just that you could do a lot of good by actively pursuing justice and supporting the positive changes happening on the planet. Turn what you know for the good of others. Do you know what I mean?
